                     ENSURING CHILD SAFETY AND AWARENESS REGARDING THE POCSO ACT

Dear Parents/Guardians,

POCSO in schools is not just about dealing with abuse after it happens. It’s about prevention, awareness and creating a culture where every child feels safe.

At Shanti Gyan Niketan Sr. Sec. Public School,the safety, well-being, and holistic development of our students are our highest priorities. Creating a secure learning environment requires a collaborative effort between the school and home. To reinforce this partnership, we want to share important information regarding child protection laws, specifically the POCSO Act.

What is the POCSO Act?

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act is a comprehensive law enacted by the Government of India to protect children (any individual under the age of 18) from sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and pornography.

The law is designed to be child-friendly at every stage, ensuring the child's physical, emotional, and mental well-being is safeguarded during any legal process.

Key Pillars of Child Safety Under POCSO

• Gender-Neutral Protection:The act protects all children under 18, regardless of gender.
• Mandatory Reporting:Legally, any individual who suspects or knows that a child has been subjected to abuse is required to report it. Failure to report is a punishable offense.
• Confidentiality:The identity of the child is strictly protected by law and cannot be disclosed to the public or media.

Our Commitment at School

We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of child misconduct or safety breaches. Our preventive measures include:

1. Strict Staff Vetting:Thorough background checks and police verification for all teaching, non-teaching, and support staff.
2. Continuous Surveillance:CCTV monitoring of school corridors, entry points, and common areas.
3. Regular Awareness Sessions:Conducting age-appropriate workshops for students on "Safe and Unsafe Touch" and digital safety.
4. Internal Committee:A dedicated Child Protection Committee to immediately address any safety concerns or grievances.

How Parents Can Partner with Us

Open communication at home is the most effective shield for a child. We encourage you to:

• Create an Open Dialogue:Assure your children that they can talk to you about anything without fear of anger or judgment.
• Teach Body Autonomy:Educate your child that their body belongs to them, and they have the right to say "No" to any touch that makes them uncomfortable.
• Monitor Digital Footprints:Be aware of the games, apps, and online platforms your child uses, as digital harassment is also covered under strict legal frameworks.
• Listen to Changes in Behaviour:Sudden anxiety, withdrawal, drop in academic performance, or reluctance to go to specific places should be addressed gently and promptly.
